How Can I Have a Power Running Game in Youth, Peewee, Midget and Pop Warner Football?

Every youth football coach wants to know how he can have a smash mouth, power running attack in youth, peewee. midget or Pop Warner football.  There are many factors you need to do to prepare your team for a power running attack.  It all starts with the talent of your players.  I will go over a few of the possible scenarios below.

If you have a group of strong but slow players you will be relying on your offensive line to make holes and hold their blocks longer than normal so the slower backs can get extra yards.  The logical offense to run would be either the Power I Offense or the Single Wing Offense.  Both of these offensive systems provide simple to teach and great blocking schemes which is necessary at the youth football level.

If you have no running back or backfield speed then your plan of attack will be running between the tackle holes.  You will need to rely on double team blocking and getting numbers to the hole.  By using extra blockers you should be able to push the defenders away from the hole long enough to get even a slower back through the hole.  You will need to spend many hours with your running backs making sure they run hard and direct to the hole.

If you are fortunate to have some speed in your backfield then you can use counters, sweeps and reverses in your offense.  Both the Power I and Single Wing offense have very effective speed plays, counters and reverses.
