What Should I Do as a First Year Pee Wee Tackle Football Coach?

It’s late July and the local league needs extra coaches for the youth, pee wee, pop Warner or midget football team.  You think you know the game so you volunteer for the eight year old first year tackle division.  You find out that you will be coaching the cut squad, or the “A” team so you will be selecting the group of players for your squad.  If the league you are in does not have a set tryout or evaluation system, pick up a copy of Youth Football Tryouts and Evaluations as this is a priceless guide in helping you evaluate talent and select the right kids.

After you have selected your squad you now have approximately three weeks to get them ready for their first game.  This is not the pros, c0llege or even high school so you need to make sure you select the appropriate system to give your players, and yourself, the best chance to succeed.  There is no question that the best offense for the first year tackle players is the single wing.  It is simple to teach and will mess up the opposing coaches in a big way.  As far as defense goes a basic 5-3 defense should do the trick.

As with all playbooks or systems you need to make sure you are using an age appropriate system.  Our playbooks.info/playbooks/specials-combinations/beginner-coaching-special/”>Beginner Coaching Special gives the new coach the basic Beginner Single Wing Offense book coupled with the 5-3 Defensive playbook packaged together for one low price.  Each book is easy to understand and teach to the new players.  These systems give you all you need to compete with any team in your league and still spend the majority of your practice time on football fundamentals which is most important for the young players.
