The Angle Tackling drill is used by many levels of peewee football coaches to improve the players tackling. If you are coaching a flag team the angle tackling drill is great for teaching defenders how to grab the flag. This is one of the many drills explained in great detail in our Youth Football Drills Playbook. It helps the tacklers learn to take proper angles, proper tackling form and aggressive tackling techniques. The angle tackling drill also does a nice job of making your running backs tougher. The running backs in the angle tackling drill will be hit hard so this helps them learn how to hold on to the ball.
The Diagram below shows how the drill is run.

To set the angle tackling drill up you need three cones and two lines. It is best to run this drill against the sidelines on the practice field. You place one cone in front of the running back line, one cone about 7 yards away and three yards up and the last cone in a direct straight line from the running back line cone approximately 15 yards down field. The objective of this drill is for the defenders to learn how to take the correct angle when chasing down a ball carrier. To start the angle tackling drill, the coach blows the whistle and the running back sprints as hard as he can towards the cone straight ahead 15 yards down field. On the same whistle the defender takes off at a 45 degree angle and tries to catch and tackle the running back. A simple rotation from both lines is used to assure all players get to chance to be a runner and a tackler.
The agle tackling drill is just one of the many drills featured in our Youth Footbal Drills Playbook.
